Outpost Events
October 16 , 2010 Mark Your Calendar! The Last Organic Outpost is hosting the: This event is, as always, a collaboration of people and ideas. Last year, as many as 2000 people came to the Community GreenFest. This event captured all of Houston's wonderful diversity with people attending from all over the city. The event will feature music from all over the world, spoken word, dance and drumming as well as workshops and speakers including, Colin Beavan, the No Impact Man, Meriwether the Adventurer (a wild edibles expert from Houston) and one of our partners, Dan Phillips, recently named the number one recycler in American by Reader's Digest Magazine. The Last Organic Outpost's founder, Joe Icet will be speaking about The Food Everywhere Movement focusing on Neighborhood Food Security. We will have a variety of local community vendors and activities for children, as well as information about upcoming events events in the 5th Ward and 3rd Ward. The Last Organic Outpost will host our weekly "Farming Market" with food picked from the 2.5 acre farm where the event is held. Last Concert Cafe, Staci Davis of Radical Eats, Michael Woodson of KPFT's Living Art (The burger and dawg guy at the fest) and Kelvin Williams (AKA, the snowcone man) are lined up for food so far with more to come! Below are two links to short video clips from Channels 39's "Going Green with Yolanda" program which had excellent coverage of last years event. We need tons of help to get ready for this event as the time is short and funds are very limited. We can use help with materials, in kind donations, clean up, repairs, planting, weeding and mowing. Look for a link next week on Facebook and our newsletter, where you can go to see what we need to do and how you can help us make this a great festival. If you just gotta volunteer now send us an email at lastorganicoutpost@gmail.com with Community GreenFest in the subject line. This weekend we will be working on clearing the area behind the stage of grass and and junk that Ken can move out some of the metal and old cars on Monday. Meriwether the Adventurer and the world famous Zombie Killers will be out in the morning to start getting the kids playground secure and tidy. So if you are good with tools and fixing stuff we have the job for you. And we will be weed eating and clearing beds to ready them for fall vegetables. We will be starting cucumbers in pots also. Due to the heat, we are taking a siesta mid day from about 12-4, so come early or come late.
