Outpost News August 12, 2010 Hello from the Farm Effort in Houston's inner city! One of the direction we are working toward at the Outpost is developing a neighborhood food security plan. This means being able to look out your window and see food growing or being able to walk or bike to a close by food source. By growing the 5th Ward Food belt around the Emile Street Community Farm, we are working toward making this a reality. By raising awareness of this huge need for local nutrient dense food, it is our hope that in the near future that unused land surrounding the city can be developed by partnering with land owners and encouraging land stewardship by growing food. These farms would not only be highly productive food areas, but could also have large scale recycling of restaurant food waste. These farms could be producing food within 60 days. The ideal farm location would have an accessible water source and road access to be able to bring compost material to the site. The ideal locations would be central to 2 or 3 major cities in our area where the farms could act as a food production hub, with the possibility of accessing 18 million people in a 200 mile radius. Everything we do depends on community participation and we believe as always that planning is doing. If you have any ideas on this, bring them to the Outpost and we will work them together by building the effort through participation at any level. Share the vision with your friends. Food everywhere is our best security. Farm On!
